We had an incredible group during my presidency, who were
able to continue the momentum started in our first year. Our
club grew in size to 27 members, celebrated each others accomplishments both personally and professionally, laughed, sang “If Your Happy and You Know It” until it became our theme song, were fined for whatever unusual thing Andrew could come up with, and contributed generously with happy bucks, time and energy.
We also continued events started the first year, and added some new ones.
The second annual Johnny Appleseed Community walk, co-chaired with Lake City Medical Center, saw an increase in participation, and a downtown scavenger hunt was added to the event. (It gave the downtown walkers something to look for.)
We hosted the second annual Rotary District Golf event co-sponsored with the Red Wing Rotary. The success was so great; we were able to meet our 3-year Rotary Foundation Pledge in two years.
During Lake City Water-ski Days, we had our first booth selling caramel apples and drinks. We learned
a lot and acquired experience we would use for future events.
We joined forces with our fellow service organizations, Kiwanis, Lions, and Masons,
and served free pancakes to our community, as a thank-you for the support Lake City
receives for all service organizations. We had so many members show up I didn’t even have to flip pancakes, much to the relief of every
one!
A new fundraiser was added, the first annual Lake City Rotary Radio Days. (Say that fast three
times!) We took over Lake Hits 95 radio station one Saturday and raise over $1,500 for playground equipment at Bluff View Elementary School.
I knew we had a talented group, but they definitely out-did themselves.
A High School student was sent to Camp Enterprise in the spring. The Camp is for students interested in pursuing business in the future. We were honored to have the student attend one of our meetings and share her
experience.
A new Rotary bench found it’s way to our beautiful river walk. It was
so well received that as part of our centennial project, we decided to place
a second bench. Many citizens commented that it was a great addition to our community,
and a great place to take a break as well.
An important undertaking was the development of our web site. Many thanks to Kristin Witham and Star Tech Computing for their
help in design and hosting our web site.
Last but certainly not least, we honored Cheri Kramer with our first
ever Paul Harris award. Cheri more than deserved the award and we will always be eternally grateful to her for her vision and hard work to bring Rotary to Lake City.
It was an honor and privilege to serve as president, but the credit goes
to the members who made it all happen and made it look easy in the process. Barb
